Dengue is a mosquito-borne disease that is common in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Mild dengue fever causes high fever and flu-like symptoms. The Mayo Clinic says that the severe form of dengue fever, also known as dengue hemorrhagic fever, can cause severe bleeding, sudden drop in blood pressure (shock) and even death.

There is no cure or treatment for dengue. Hence, it is important that you seek medical advice as soon as you notice the initial symptoms; high fever being one of them.

Symptoms of Dengue

Many people do not notice any symptoms or signs of a dengue infection. However, when symptoms do appear, many people mistake them for common illnesses such as the flu or a common cold.

Dengue symptoms usually appear after a bite from an infected mosquito. Dengue usually causes a high fever that can reach 104 F (40 C). Other symptoms of dengue include:

  1. Headaches
  2. Muscles, Bone or Joint Pain
  3. Nausea
  4. Vomiting
  5. Pain Behind the Eyes
  6. Swollen Glands
  7. Rash

The Mayo Clinic says most people recover in a week or less. In some cases, symptoms worsen and can be life-threatening. "This is called severe dengue, dengue hemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome."

Severe dengue occurs when your blood vessels become damaged and leaky. And the number of clot-forming cells (platelets) in your bloodstream decreases. This can lead to shock, internal bleeding, organ failure, and even death.

Warning signs of severe dengue fever, which is a life-threatening condition, can develop quickly. Warning signs usually begin on the first or second day after your fever has gone and may include:

  1. Severe stomach pain
  2. Persistent vomiting
  3. Bleeding from your gums or nose
  4. Bleeding in your urine, stool or vomit
  5. Bleeding under the skin, which may look like bruising
  6. Difficulty or rapid breathing
  7. Fatigue
  8. Irritability or restlessness.
